Daredevil #117

Daredevil #117 has just come out and I have to say that it is a little heavy on the personal drama with very little action to be found. Then again, fans of Daredevil have come to expect such an approach since old hornhead has clearly stolen the mantel from the Silver Surfer as the most brooding character in all of comicdom. Then again, you can hardly blame the Surfer since it was Galactus that created his problems. Daredevils problems, however, derive mostly from his nightmarish women troubles that are often his own fault. (BTW - Check out exterior shutters)

This is not to say that the second part of the “Return of the King” storyline is without its positives. The new dynamic that is developing between the Kingpin and Daredevil is slowly being rolled out. This would be a far better approach than rushing through the storyline to reach a quick conclusion. It is not uncommon for heroes and villains to team up, but it was kind of silly to see Iron Man and Doctor Doom fight, team up, defeat a malevolent entity, then break up, then fight again – all in the span of 30 pages. But, that was a different era and the era required more simplistic storytelling.

The narrative in “Return of the King” seems to be headed down a path where the themes reflect there is less of a difference between heroes and villains underneath the surface. How this will play out will take a few more months. Well see how it turns out. For right now, we can say so far, so good.
